Nigeria and UK Agree on Migration Framework for Deportees

The Nigerian Presidency, represented by Temitope Ajayi, clarified on Friday that Nigeria will not accept foreign deportees under the recent migration agreement with the United Kingdom. This agreement, signed during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's visit to the UK, strictly pertains to the return of Nigerian citizens who lack legal residency status in the UK.

Ajayi emphasized that the deal, which involved Nigeria's Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, does not allow for the return of non-Nigerians. The agreement outlines a framework for the safe return and reintegration of affected Nigerians, ensuring their treatment aligns with Nigerian law.

It includes provisions for secure travel documents, proper identity checks, and protections for vulnerable individuals, such as trafficking victims, while also promoting cooperation on migration and border management.
