UK Proposes Military Support to Strengthen Nigeria Ties

The United Kingdom has proposed to support Nigeria with air defense systems, counter-unmanned aerial systems, and enhanced military intelligence capabilities to deepen its strategic defense partnership with the Nigerian Army. This announcement was made by Brigadier Tom Harper, the British Defence Adviser to Nigeria, during his visit to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at Army Headquarters in Abuja.

The discussions included establishing a Forward Operating Base, expanding tactical Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance capabilities, and potential transfers of protected mobility vehicles and specialized ammunition. These measures are part of the UK's commitment under the Security and Defence Partnership to enhance Nigeria's operational capacity.

Future training programs are expected to include personnel from Niger, Cameroon, and Chad. Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasized the importance of this partnership in addressing asymmetric warfare and operational challenges in the North-East, highlighting the need for advanced training and capabilities.
