Nigeria and UK Enhance Security Partnership Against Threats

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have deepened their security partnership, targeting terrorism, cybersecurity, and maritime threats. This development was formalized in a communiqué following the fourth UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue held in Abuja on June 23-24, 2026.

Co-chaired by Nigeria's National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the UK's National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, the dialogue resulted in commitments to strengthen cooperation based on mutual accountability. The countries agreed to enhance defense collaboration, including support for Nigeria's armed forces and joint doctrine training.

They also emphasized the importance of maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and pledged to combat illicit maritime activities and transnational threats. Additionally, a framework for cybersecurity cooperation was established, focusing on intelligence sharing and combating misinformation.

The UK reaffirmed its support for Nigeria's aviation security and anti-kidnapping initiatives. The communiqué also addressed the need for transparent investigations into human rights violations and the importance of maintaining public order during Nigeria's upcoming elections.
