UK Police Launch Hub to Combat Illegal Knife Sales

On Thursday, UK police established a national hub to address the illegal sale of knives and machetes, particularly through online platforms. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce knife crime in England and Wales, which has reached alarming levels, with London reporting the highest rates.

The Metropolitan Police released statistics indicating that by 2025, there will be a significant increase in stabbing victims, particularly among the youth. The National Police Chiefs' Council, led by Stephen Clayman, emphasized the need for stringent measures to tackle the supply of knives, which often end up in the hands of vulnerable individuals, including children.

The government has committed £1.7 billion to £2.2 billion over the next three years to support this effort. Current regulations do not adequately prevent the sale of knives to minors, and many sellers exploit social media to bypass existing laws.

The initiative includes plans for stronger verification checks on online sales and aims to introduce legislation named after Ronan Kanda, a teenager killed by a sword purchased online.
