UK Customs Money Declaration Rules for Travellers

Travellers entering or leaving the United Kingdom with £10,000 or more are required to declare the amount to customs authorities. This rule applies to individuals as well as families or groups, where the combined amount carried is £10,000 or more.

Declarations can be made up to 72 hours before travel. Different regulations exist for Northern Ireland, where anyone carrying €10,000 or more between Northern Ireland and a non-EU country must declare it.

Travellers must provide detailed information about the money, including the carrier, owner, intended recipient, journey details, amount, source of funds, and intended use. Declarations can be made online or by phone, and those who declare online receive a reference number for customs.

Non-compliance can result in enforcement actions, including the seizure of the money by Border Force officers. Travellers are advised to check customs rules and complete necessary declarations before their journey.
