UK Visa Changes Slash Dental Nurse Sponsorship by 95%

On July 22, 2025, the UK Home Office implemented immigration rule changes that raised the skill threshold for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship to Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) level 6, equivalent to graduate level. This change resulted in over 100 occupations losing access to sponsorship, significantly impacting the dental sector.

Specifically, dental nurses, dental hygienists, and dental technicians are no longer eligible for new sponsorship applications, while dentists and dental therapists remain unaffected. Data shows only six sponsored work entry-clearance grants for dental nurses between Q4 2025 and Q2 2026, a drastic decline from 122 in the same quarters prior to the rule change, representing a 95% drop.

As of August 17, 2026, the General Dental Council recorded 69,824 dental nurses, but registration does not indicate clinical employment status. Transitional arrangements allow some dental nurses who obtained sponsorship before the rule change to extend their visas.

The changes coincide with rising costs in the sector, including increased fees for the Overseas Registration Examination and sponsor licence applications.
