Women Groups Demand Due Process in Umahi Debt Allegations

On March 1, 2026, in Abuja, four women-led advocacy organizations, including the Women Justice Initiative and the Coalition of Patriot Nigerian Women, held a joint press briefing addressing allegations against Minister David Nweze Umahi concerning a ₦24.5 million debt. They insisted that the matter should be resolved through proper judicial channels rather than social media campaigns.

Dr. Amina Yusuf, representing the Women Justice Initiative, expressed concern over unsubstantiated claims that could undermine governance, emphasizing the need for credible evidence.

The allegations reportedly date back to 2015, with no formal demand letter or civil action documented. Hajia Halimat Bello highlighted that commercial transactions of such magnitude require proper documentation.

Dr. Grace Onuoha, chairperson of the National Women Alliance, warned against the dangers of social media acting as a judge, stressing that emotional narratives should not overshadow legal standards.

The organizations collectively affirmed the need for a mature legal process in Nigeria, rejecting any form of trial by social media.
