COCSON Defends Umahi Against N24.5m Debt Allegation

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations Nigeria (COCSON) has come to the defense of Minister David Nweze Umahi, responding to allegations made by activist Omoyele Sowore regarding a N24.5 million debt linked to campaign materials from the 2015 Ebonyi State governorship election. COCSON held a press conference in Abuja, stating that the claims lack credible evidence, highlighting the absence of written contracts or supporting documents.

They questioned the timing of the allegations, which surfaced nearly a decade after the supposed transaction, and emphasized that Nigeria's judicial system provides legitimate avenues for debt recovery. COCSON announced plans for a solidarity rally on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to support Umahi and counter a proposed protest against him.

They warned against the dangers of using social media as a substitute for legal processes and affirmed that no citizen is above the law, urging that accusations should be substantiated with evidence.
