UNFPA Advocates Zero Tolerance for Gender-Based Violence

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has advocated for zero tolerance towards gender-based violence (GBV) in schools and communities, stating that such abuse hinders development and violates young people's rights. This call was made on Wednesday in Bauchi during a sensitization program on the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic (ATAP).
Mrs Deborah Tabara, Gender and Reproductive Health Analyst and Coordinator for UNFPA in Bauchi, emphasized that protecting young people from violence is essential for their development. She described GBV as a significant development issue affecting all genders.
Garba Dabo Maleka, Director of Public Prosecution, urged students to reject sexual exploitation for grades and utilize available reporting channels. The management of ATAP, represented by Dr Alhaji Abdulkadir Waziri, expressed commitment to eradicating GBV and mentioned existing disciplinary measures against offenders.
Maimuna Ibrahim Yusuf from the Ministry of Justice called for the establishment of gender desks in tertiary institutions to educate on GBV and improve reporting mechanisms.
