UN Chief Calls for Action Against Poverty on Mandela Day

On Nelson Mandela International Day, July 18th, António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, urged governments and citizens worldwide to take concrete actions to honor Nelson Mandela's legacy by eradicating poverty and reducing inequality. In a message marking the day, Guterres described Mandela as a towering figure of peace, reconciliation, justice, and human rights.

He emphasized that the theme for 2026 is "Hand in Hand to Combat Poverty and Inequality," reflecting Mandela's belief that the fight against poverty is a matter of justice, not charity. Guterres highlighted the increasing concentration of wealth among a small number of people while millions struggle to meet basic needs such as food, water, and shelter.

He called for collective action to build fair economies, invest in decent work, and ensure universal health coverage and quality education. Guterres reiterated the importance of standing together to realize Mandela's vision of a just, inclusive, and equal world.
