UN Deputy Chief Amina Mohammed Advocates for Peace in Benue

On Friday, Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited Benue State, Nigeria, where she called for renewed commitment to peacebuilding and sustainable development amidst global uncertainties. During a town hall meeting at the Government House in Makurdi, she warned that conflicts, climate shocks, and economic pressures are increasing strains on communities worldwide.

Mohammed reaffirmed the UN's pledge to bridge current realities with future aspirations, referencing ongoing conflicts in Iran and the need for sustained diplomacy. She commended the Benue State government's 2026 budget focused on rural development and praised Nigeria's adoption of a digital payroll system for transparency.

Emphasizing the importance of gender inclusivity in governance, she noted Benue's potential as Nigeria's food basket. She cautioned about the growing risks of flooding and erratic weather due to climate change and pledged continued UN support.

Governor Hyacinth Alia outlined his administration's achievements in infrastructure, healthcare, and job creation, while Diana Ochoga highlighted the urgent need for collaboration to address insecurity and rebuild trust.
