UN Celebrates Football's Role in Global Unity in Abuja

On World Football Day, the United Nations celebrated football's ability to unite people across borders and cultures at an event held on the astro turf in Wuse, Abuja. Oluseyi Soremekun, the head of the United Nations Information Centre, stated that football serves as a universal language that fosters teamwork and resilience, aligning closely with the UN's mission.

The event featured a football match and activities symbolizing the movement towards advancing global development goals. Soremekun explained that the program reflects a collective effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Amina Mohammed, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, acknowledged football's global reach and its contributions to peace, diplomacy, and international cooperation. She urged participation in the UN Football for the Goals initiative, which includes 16 football legends, such as Nigerian football icon Daniel Amokachi, to promote health, climate action, and gender equality.
