UN Launches 2026-2030 Programme to Boost Nigeria's Security

The United Nations launched its ambitious 2026–2030 Country Programme for Nigeria in Abuja, aimed at strengthening the country's security, justice, and public health systems. UNODC representative Cheikh Tour emphasized the urgency of the program, which addresses complex threats such as illicit drug trafficking, human trafficking, maritime insecurity, and corruption.

The program is built on decades of partnership and broad consultations with the Nigerian government and civil society. It has four main pillars: strengthening the criminal justice system, tackling corruption and illicit financial flows, supporting counter-terrorism efforts, and addressing organized crime in various forms.

Buba Marwa, Chairman of the NDLEA, highlighted the alarming levels of drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria, which pose significant public health and security crises. The program aims to ensure equitable access to justice and health services, particularly for vulnerable groups, while reinforcing the rule of law and human rights.
