UN Supports Nigeria's Human Rights Legislative Efforts

The United Nations, through its High Commissioner for Human Rights representative Maham Malick Fall, has pledged ongoing support to Nigeria in its efforts to strengthen human rights. This commitment was made during a public hearing by the House Committee on Human Rights regarding two critical bills: the Human Rights Defenders and Protect Bill (HB 1867) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Act repeal and re-enactment bill (HB 2376).

Fall emphasized that these legislative efforts are a significant step forward in enhancing the institutional framework for human rights protection in Nigeria. He noted that the NHRC's accreditation status was reviewed in 2023, and the proposed bills directly respond to recommendations aimed at addressing gaps in compliance.

The bills aim to reinforce Nigeria's commitment to international human rights obligations and enhance the NHRC's role in addressing challenges. Tajudeen Abba, the Speaker of the House, opened the hearing, underscoring the necessity of these bills to protect citizens' rights amidst various threats, including violence and economic hardship.
