NIGCOMSAT 1R Faces Debt Crisis and Operational Challenges

NIGCOMSAT 1R, Nigeria's communication satellite, has encountered severe operational difficulties since its launch on December 19, 2011. Following the removal of its pioneer chief executive, Timasaniyu Ahm Rufai, on February 14, 2014, the satellite has faced management and financial issues.

The current executive director, Abimbola Alal, has been unable to turn around the satellite's fortunes, which has not achieved commercial success in the Nigerian market. NIGCOMSAT reportedly owes $11.4 million to China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) for maintenance services, with allegations of failure to remit payments leading to threats of service termination.

Despite claims of no debt, CGWIC insists on the outstanding amount, which has accumulated due to damage to the ground station in Abuja in 2019. The satellite's operational challenges are compounded by low local patronage and a lack of investment, raising concerns about its future viability.
