Nigeria and Italy Join Forces for $5 Billion Education Fund

Nigeria and Italy have partnered to mobilize $5 billion for global education financing through the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated that the GPE vision aligns with Nigeria’s educational agenda, focusing on improving access and teacher capacity building.
This announcement was made during the Multiply Possibility High-level event titled “A New Era for Education Financing” at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, highlighted that education is a crucial investment for Nigeria's economic future and national productivity.
Since assuming office in 2023, the Tinubu administration has increased educational resources and initiated reforms to enhance basic education financing. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund aims to widen access to higher education, with plans to utilize recovered funds from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for educational financing.
The GPE initiative is expected to benefit approximately 29 million children and 500,000 teachers across Nigeria.
