Tinubu Urges Diplomacy Over Military Action at UN Assembly

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, addressed the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, stating that military victories alone cannot secure lasting peace. He urged the international community to prioritize diplomacy, reconciliation, inclusive political processes, and sustainable development in conflict resolution.

Tinubu highlighted the need for military responses to be complemented by political and developmental measures to address the root causes of violence. He called for the United Nations to enhance peacekeeping efforts and focus on peacebuilding, mediation, and institution-building.

The President emphasized the importance of restoring trust in international institutions and adhering to the UN's founding principles. He also urged for urgent diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts in Sudan and other war-torn regions, stressing the need to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian access.

Tinubu warned against propaganda that shields perpetrators of violence from accountability, asserting that Nigeria's experience with Boko Haram and ISWAP shows that military action must be supported by education, economic opportunity, and accountable governance.
