Shettima Advocates for UN Security Council Reform for Africa

During the General Debate at the ongoing 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States, Vice President Kashim Shettima, standing in for President Bola Tinubu, urged for a radical reform of the UN Security Council. He stated that Africa can no longer be marginalized in global power distribution, which he argued has remained unchanged since 1945.

Shettima demanded at least two permanent seats for Africa, complete with rights, responsibilities, and veto power, in addition to five non-permanent seats. He referenced the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration to support Nigeria's position.

Furthermore, President Tinubu called on world leaders to end global warfare and reject rising nationalism, stressing the importance of restoring trust in international institutions. He highlighted Nigeria's commitment to peacekeeping in Africa, citing past efforts in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Darfur, Mali, and The Gambia, and reaffirmed Nigeria's readiness to take on greater responsibilities in promoting peace and security across the continent.
