UNICEF, Group Seek Six Months Maternity Leave

UNICEF and a youth group have called on the Kano State government to approve six months of paid maternity leave for mothers to support exclusive breastfeeding. This initiative aims to promote infant nutrition, health, and reduce child mortality rates, especially in commemoration of the 2025 World Breastfeeding Week.

UNICEF's chief in Kano emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in providing essential nutrients and antibodies to infants, leading to better health outcomes and reduced risks of diseases like cancer and diabetes. The group highlighted that breastfeeding for the first six months has been proven to prevent deadly childhood diseases and other health challenges.

They urged Governor Abba Yusuf and stakeholders to support this initiative to improve nutrition and health outcomes for women, children, and youth in the state.
