UNICEF and Kano State Join Forces to Reduce Mortality

UNICEF and the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board have partnered to address the critical issue of maternal and child mortality in Kano State. Ms.

Judith Leveille, Chief Field Officer for UNICEF Nigeria, highlighted the urgent need for intervention across 18 local government areas, covering 200 wards. Currently, only 50% of pregnant women receive skilled care, and just 36% of deliveries are attended by skilled birth attendants, resulting in a maternal mortality rate of 158 per 1,000 live births.

This situation presents a significant public health challenge requiring coordinated and sustained efforts. Leveille commended the National Primary Health Care Development Agency and the Kano State Government for their commitment to reducing maternal and child mortality, aligning with national health priorities.

The collaboration will support the implementation of the Mamii Community-Based Health Worker program across the targeted wards. Prof.

Salisu Ibrahim and Dr. Aliyu Maiduts reaffirmed their commitment to delivering high-quality, people-centered healthcare, while Dr.

Nana Abubakar emphasized the importance of strategic coordination and capacity building in improving health indicators.
