UNICEF Partners with Nigerian Government to Improve Hygiene in Kano and Jigawa States

UNICEF, in partnership with the Child Rights Information Bureau and the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, is intensifying efforts to improve hygiene practices in schools and health centers in Kano and Jigawa states. The initiative aims to achieve 100% access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services in schools and healthcare facilities by 2030.

Despite progress, Nigeria still faces challenges in providing basic wash facilities, with only 11% of schools having such facilities. During a media dialogue event, UNICEF's representatives highlighted the importance of proper hygiene in enhancing student retention and attendance in schools.

The Jigawa State government has prioritized the implementation of wash programs, allocating funds in the 2026 budget for this purpose. Governor Umar Namadi recently visited several schools and primary healthcare centers to assess existing wash facilities and support the initiative.
