Kano State Prioritizes Rural Infrastructure Development and Education Initiatives

Kano State, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, is prioritizing rural infrastructure development to address long-standing development gaps in rural communities. Alhaji Moham Tajo Othman, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, disclosed that the state government is focusing on critical sectors such as primary healthcare, water supply, education, agriculture, and rural roads to improve living standards and boost economic productivity.

The state's 2026 budget allocates significant percentages to education (31%), health (16%), and infrastructure (25%). Achievements in education include the recruitment of 6,000 teachers, rehabilitation of classrooms, distribution of school uniforms, and tuition fee reductions in state-owned tertiary institutions.

Additionally, the state has reduced tuition fees for foreign postgraduate scholarships and aims to support agriculture through various initiatives. UNICEF has commended Kano State for its rural water and sanitation initiatives, as well as its commitment to rural electrification projects with the support of the Rural Electrification Agency.
