Adamawa Communities Tackle Open Defecation with UNICEF

Communities in the Gany Local Government Area of Adamawa State are actively working to end open defecation as part of a UNICEF-led WASH project. The initiative has prompted the local government to promulgate a bye-law banning open defecation, which is deemed necessary to eliminate various diseases previously faced by the community.

The project aims to make the area open defecation-free, with significant improvements noted in health status due to UNICEF's interventions. Dr.

Nuzhat Rafiqu, the Chief of the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, expressed satisfaction with the compliance levels observed, particularly among young girls who have begun constructing toilet facilities in their homes. Local leaders, including district heads Alh.

Hammantukur Moham and Alh. Kabiru Jelani, highlighted the drastic improvement in health conditions and school enrollment rates as a direct result of the project, emphasizing the importance of environmental hygiene in saving lives.
