Uyo Teaching Hospital Doctors Strike After EFCC Raid

Doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Akwa Ibom State have begun an indefinite strike in response to a raid conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday. The EFCC's operation involved arrests linked to an ongoing court case, which escalated tensions among hospital staff.

Eyewitness accounts reported that the EFCC's actions led to resistance from hospital staff, prompting reinforcements and resulting in gunfire during the incident. Some staff members were allegedly injured, and property, including phones, was damaged as health workers attempted to document the scene.

In solidarity, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Joint Health Sector Union ordered an immediate shutdown of services across hospitals in the state. The NMA condemned the EFCC's heavy-handed approach and reported that senior medical personnel were assaulted and detained during the encounter.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command is involved in the situation, which has led to a complete halt of medical services at the hospital.
