China to Implement Zero-Tariff Measures for Nigeria

Starting May 1, China will fully implement zero-tariff measures for 53 African countries, including Nigeria, as part of a broader strategy to deepen cooperation and expand market opportunities. This initiative will cover 100 percent of tariff lines for 33 least developed African countries and extend preferential tariff rates to 20 non-least developed countries, including Nigeria.

The measures are expected to directly reduce costs for Nigerian products entering the Chinese market, particularly in sectors like agriculture, where products such as sesame, ginger, cashew, and cocoa will benefit. The initiative aims to translate market opportunities into tangible benefits, encouraging enterprises to improve quality standards and optimize product structures.

It will also support local value addition, create employment opportunities, and enhance Nigeria's industrial capacity. The success of these measures will depend on Nigerian producers aligning with Chinese market requirements, including quality and regulatory standards.

China plans to work closely with Nigeria to facilitate trade and provide technical support to enhance export capabilities.
