China's Zero-Tariff Policy Boosts African Trade Opportunities

China's zero-tariff policy, which took full effect on May 1, 2023, is expected to significantly enhance trade relations with 53 African countries. This policy aims to dismantle trade barriers and deepen cooperation between China and Africa, ultimately benefiting the people of both regions.

In Rwanda, local companies like Fisher Global are capitalizing on this policy to gain better access to the Chinese market, particularly in the export of dried chili peppers. The company, managed by Herman Uwizeyimana, has expanded its operations from 15 hectares to 300 hectares, creating 31 permanent jobs and 600 casual jobs.

The export of dried chili to China began in 2022, with the company aiming to surpass 1,000 metric tons annually. The policy is expected to empower African farmers, as illustrated by Emmanuel Bihoyiki, a 28-year-old farmer whose income has tripled due to chili cultivation.

China's broader market access initiatives are anticipated to further support African companies in participating in major trade events.
