China and ECOWAS Strengthen Ties for West Africa's Growth

The Chinese ambassador to Nigeria discussed the deepening cooperation between China and ECOWAS, marking a significant moment in their relationship. Dr.

Omar Alieu Touray, the ECOWAS Commission President, noted the historical friendship established since the formal relations began in 1990. The ambassador reaffirmed China's commitment to supporting ECOWAS in regional affairs, emphasizing mutual respect and the importance of political trust.

Key initiatives include the implementation of zero tariff treatment for 53 African countries starting May 1, aimed at enhancing trade. China has also pledged to assist in agricultural development, food security, and capacity building in governance.

The ambassador highlighted China's participation in UN peacekeeping operations in West Africa and its ongoing support for ECOWAS in counter-terrorism and humanitarian efforts. The cooperation aims to create a virtuous cycle of security and development, enhancing the livelihoods of people in the region.
