UNN Dean Calls for Prioritization of Oral Health in Nigeria

During her 236th inaugural lecture at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, Prof. Linda Okoy, the Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, called on the Federal Government to prioritize oral health as an integral part of national development. She highlighted that only 0.5% of the overall health sector budget, which amounts to N2.48 trillion, is allocated to oral health.

Okoy proposed that oral health services should be included in the national health insurance scheme, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. She also urged the government to explore pilot programs for water and salt fluoridation and to implement school-based oral health programs.

Additionally, she recommended regulating cariogenic products for children and mandating clear labeling of sugar content in food and beverages. Okoy emphasized the need to strengthen the oral health workforce by developing mid-level oral health workers and ensuring the availability of essential preventive supplies.

She encouraged Nigerians to improve oral health outcomes through regular dental care practices.
