Parents Protest Delay in University of Uyo Dentistry Program

Parents of dental students at the University of Uyo staged a peaceful protest in Uyo on Friday, expressing their concerns regarding the delay in the accreditation of the dentistry program. They fear that their children, who are already advanced in their training, may lose an academic year due to unresolved accreditation issues.

Mr. Sundai Elijah, chairman of the parents' forum, emphasized the emotional and financial strain on families who have invested in their children's education with the expectation of becoming qualified dental surgeons.

The parents allege that the university has been admitting students into the program without the necessary approval from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), which has not conducted an accreditation visit since the program began. They called for urgent intervention to prevent their children from suffering due to circumstances beyond their control.

In response, Prof. Samuel Odewumi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, assured that securing accreditation remains a key priority and that the institution is taking steps to meet regulatory requirements.
