US Deploys Drones and Troops to Support Nigeria's Military

The United States has enhanced Nigeria's anti-terrorism efforts by deploying multiple MQ-9 drones and 200 troops to Bauchi State. This military support, confirmed by Nigerian officials, is focused on providing training and intelligence assistance to combat Islamist militants in northern Nigeria.

The troops will operate from an airfield in Bauchi but will not be integrated into Nigerian frontline units. Their primary role is to collect intelligence rather than conduct airstrikes.

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), noted that while the military has made progress, challenges such as limited manpower and equipment persist. The U.S. deployment follows recent airstrikes targeting militants in northwestern Nigeria and is part of a broader strategy to address the spread of insurgency linked to ISIS and Al-Qaeda across West Africa.

Major Gen. Samaila Uba confirmed the establishment of a U.S.-Nigeria intelligence fusion cell to enhance operational capabilities against terrorist threats.
