Nigeria-U.S. Ties Could Shape Africa's Future, Says Consul

At a reception in Lagos, U.S. Consul General Brandon Hudspeth emphasized the transformative potential of the Nigeria-U.S. partnership, stating it could shape America's relationship with Africa and influence global affairs across commercial, cultural, political, and economic domains.

He noted that two-way trade between the countries has reached nearly $15 billion annually, with over 100 American companies operating in Lagos. Hudspeth highlighted Nigeria's creative economy, particularly in Lagos, mentioning Nollywood, Afrobeat, and other cultural sectors, and described the city as a "frontier cultural powerhouse." He also pointed out that approximately 750,000 Nigerians in the U.S. contribute over $20 billion in remittances each year.

Hudspeth expressed optimism about the future of the partnership, particularly in the creative sector and American investments in Nigeria's economy, marking 2026 as a significant year for both nations, celebrating 250 years of American independence and 67 years of U.S.-Nigeria relations.
