US and Denmark Secure Permanent Military Access in Greenland

The United States and Denmark have finalized an agreement that allows the US permanent access, basing, and overflight rights in Greenland. Donald Trump announced this on his Truth Social platform, stating that the agreement has no expiry date and will lead to a significant US military presence on the island, which already hosts a US Space Force base.

The agreement, however, does not fulfill Trump's earlier ambitions to acquire Greenland. The Danish Prime Minister's office indicated that this deal would bolster security in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted that the agreement acknowledges Greenland's interests in international cooperation. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the deal addresses US security concerns and ensures that Greenland remains part of North America's strategic defense area.

A US State Department official mentioned that the agreement prohibits non-NATO countries from establishing bases in Greenland and will remain effective even if Greenland gains independence.
