U.S. Firm Threatens Sanctions Over Nigeria Election Rigging

The U.S.-based lobbying firm Von Batten Montagu York has announced its intention to recommend sanctions against Nigerian politicians and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) found to be involved in manipulating the electoral process. This statement was made on a Wednesday and highlights growing international concerns regarding electoral malpractice in Nigeria.

The firm plans to spotlight individuals involved in electoral fraud and has indicated that it will recommend sanctions to the U.S. Congress, which may include asset freezes and travel bans.

The firm noted that while the U.S. State Department acknowledges INEC's capacity to conduct credible federal elections, it has repeatedly shown vulnerability to political interference.

The firm is expected to facilitate meetings with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and U.S. government officials, with discussions planned for March 9-10, 2026, regarding a contract with the U.S. Department of Justice.
