US Lawmaker Urges Protection for Christians in Nigeria

A member of the United States House of Representatives condemned a recent attack in Plateau State, Nigeria, which resulted in the deaths of 28 people. The attack occurred on March 29, during a significant Christian observance preceding Easter celebrations.

The lawmaker, referred to as Smith, described the incident as part of a troubling pattern of violence in the region, referencing a similar attack in 2025 when 50 people were reportedly killed in Kimakpa Village, Miango District, Bassa Local Government Area. Smith urged the Nigerian government to take immediate steps to protect Christian communities and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

He emphasized that the government has a constitutional responsibility to safeguard its citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation, and warned that repeated attacks threaten religious harmony in the country. Additionally, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja to discuss the recent violence, which Mutfwang described as an act of terror, although the motives of the perpetrators remain unclear.
