US Lawmakers Recommend Actions Against Christian Persecution

US lawmakers, led by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, submitted a report to President Trump regarding the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria. This report follows a fact-finding mission to Nigeria, where lawmakers visited internally displaced persons camps in Benue and spoke with victims of terrorism.

The findings highlight the security challenges faced by Christian communities in Nigeria and outline a plan for the US to coordinate with the Nigerian government to ensure their protection. Recommendations include establishing a bilateral US-Nigeria security agreement, dismantling jihadist networks, withholding certain US funds pending demonstrable action from the Nigerian government to stop violence against Christians, implementing sanctions, and visa restrictions against individuals and groups responsible for religious persecution.

The report also calls for technical support to help the Nigerian government curb violence from armed Fulani militias and demands the repeal of Sharia blasphemy laws.
