U.S. Lawmakers Investigate Chinese AI Models Usage

U.S. lawmakers are scrutinizing the increasing adoption of Chinese-developed artificial intelligence models by American companies amid rising geopolitical tensions between the United States and China. The U.S.

House Committee on Homeland Security and the U.S. House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party have initiated a joint investigation into this trend.

The committees have reached out to companies like Cursor and Airbnb for information regarding their use of Chinese AI technology. Andrew Garbarino, chairman of the U.S.

House Committee on Homeland Security, expressed alarm over reports that a Chinese open-weight model can match leading U.S. models in cybersecurity capabilities. Despite some U.S. government agencies prohibiting the use of certain Chinese AI models, there is currently no nationwide ban on their adoption by American firms.

Some technology executives, including Brian Armstrong of Coinbase and Flo Crivello, have supported the use of these models for cost reduction.
