US Offers Free Military Support to Nigeria Against Terrorism

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria disclosed that the United States is offering military support to Nigeria at no financial cost as part of efforts to combat terrorism. Major General Michael Onoja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this announcement during a briefing to journalists on February 26, 2026.

He explained that this support is facilitated through a partnership arrangement with the United States Africa Command and comes without any financial obligations for Nigeria. The announcement follows a recent surge in attacks and kidnappings in Adamawa State, located in the northwest region of Nigeria.

Major General Onoja dismissed suggestions of a new terrorist group emerging in the area and assured that Nigerian troops are intensifying operations against armed groups. He also addressed public concerns regarding the former military under the Operation Safe Corridor deradicalization program, stating that relevant stakeholders are reviewing the program to ensure it meets its objectives without compromising national security.
