U.S. Military Aid to Nigeria: Sovereignty Intact, Says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of Nigeria announced that U.S. military assistance is being provided at no cost and does not undermine the country's sovereignty. During a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, Director of Defence Media Operations Maj Gen Michael Onoja stated that the collaboration with the U.S. focuses on training Nigerian troops to enhance ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

He assured that Nigeria's territorial integrity and national security remain intact, emphasizing that no aspect of the country's sovereignty is compromised. Onoja urged the public to value the partnership and noted that the involvement of foreign personnel has already yielded positive outcomes in the last two months.

He clarified that U.S. personnel in Nigeria are primarily engaged in training programs, similar to arrangements where Nigerian officers travel abroad for training. Additionally, he addressed public concerns regarding security developments and acknowledged the need for a review of the federal government's de-radicalization and rehabilitation program for surrendered insurgents as part of strengthening Nigeria's counter-insurgency strategy.
