Akwa Ibom Health Unions Suspend Strike After Intervention

Health sector unions in Akwa Ibom State have suspended their indefinite strike, which began due to allegations of assault against Prof. Eyo Ekp, a member of the union, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The intervention came from Governor Pastor Umo Eno, who convened a joint stakeholder meeting on May 15, 2026, at the old executive chamber of the governor's office in Uyo. The meeting included representatives from the state government, EFCC, UUTH, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), and other health sector unions.

A communiqué issued after the meeting condemned the altercation and emphasized the need for respect and protection of healthcare workers and patients. The EFCC was urged to issue a formal apology, and a commitment was made to investigate the incident.

The unions agreed to suspend their strike in the interest of public health and to prevent further escalation of tensions.
