NAFDAC's Adeyeye Calls for Local Vaccine Manufacturing Support

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, announced that the absence of local vaccine manufacturing capacity is delaying the agency's achievement of World Health Organisation (WHO) Maturity Level 4 certification for vaccine lot release. Speaking at the 8th Nigeria Pharma Manufacturers’ Expo in Lagos, she highlighted that Nigeria has made significant progress in its medicines and vaccines regulatory system, having met eight of the nine necessary functions for WHO certification.
The remaining requirement is local vaccine production, which is essential for achieving vaccine lot release. Adeyeye called on international development partners to assist in establishing fill-and-finish modular vaccine manufacturing facilities in Nigeria.
She also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2024 Executive Order on local pharmaceutical manufacturing, which has provided critical incentives to manufacturers. Adeyeye emphasized the need to rebuild Nigeria's vaccine manufacturing capacity to enhance medicine security and reduce reliance on imports.
