Eric Chelle Decides on Victor Osimhen's AFCON 2027 Role

Eric Chelle, the head coach of the Super Eagles, is confronted with a significant decision regarding Victor Osimhen's availability for Nigeria's opening matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Galatasaray has received an official invitation for Osimhen to join the national team for Group L fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

Osimhen sustained a right groin injury during Galatasaray's 3-2 victory over Istanbul Başakşehir on September 4, where he scored before being substituted due to the injury. Tests revealed a "moderate to advanced level strain with bleeding," and Galatasaray indicated that he might not be available until after the international break.

However, recent reports suggest that Osimhen may travel with Galatasaray for their away match against Trabzonspor, which could serve as a fitness test before determining his international availability. Nigeria's matches against Madagascar on September 25 and Guinea-Bissau four days later are crucial, especially after missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup and finishing third at the 2025 AFCON.
