El-Rufai Released by ICPC to Attend Mother's Burial

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, was granted temporary release by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on compassionate grounds to attend the burial of his late mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt. His son, Bashir El-Rufai, confirmed the release via a post on X, expressing gratitude for his father's return.

El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 18, 2023, facing allegations of financial misconduct, including money laundering and abuse of office. He was arraigned alongside Joel Adoga on multiple charges, including receiving funds exceeding his legal entitlements.

The ICPC alleges that El-Rufai received a total of N289,826,998.12 on several occasions, far exceeding the legal limit of N20,013,245.00. El-Rufai has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which are set to be heard by Justice Rilwan Aikawa, with proceedings adjourned to March 31, 2023.

Additionally, he faces separate prosecution related to national security claims involving phone tapping.
