Lagos Residents Protest Against Power Outages

On Thursday, Lagos residents, primarily young Nigerians, protested against ongoing power outages, expressing their frustrations through chants and placards in the Fadeyi area. The protest highlighted the dire state of the power sector, with slogans such as "No light, no life" and "Give us regular light." The demonstrators criticized the erratic electricity supply and exorbitant estimated bills, emphasizing the negative impact on local businesses.

This protest follows a series of coordinated outcries across Nigeria, with the Nigerian Youth Congress in the Borip local government chapter condemning the lack of stable electricity as economically damaging and unacceptable. Additionally, on Tuesday, business owners in the Effurun Uvwi area staged a peaceful demonstration against high electricity bills amid warnings from industry leaders that the electricity crisis in Nigeria may worsen.

Dr. Joi Ogaji, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Power Generation Companies, warned that the situation could deteriorate further as gas suppliers halt supplies to thermal power plants, with power generation companies facing an estimated N3.3 trillion debt.
