Okocha Receives Retro Player of the Match Award

Augustin Okocha, the legendary Nigerian footballer, was honored with a retro Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance in the group stage match against Spain during the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The award, presented in a silver trophy with a custom case, was unveiled on Thursday via Okocha's Instagram page.

The recognition is part of a collaboration between Michelob Ultra and Copa90, aimed at honoring standout performances in World Cup history. Okocha's notable display on June 13, 1998, at Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, France, included exceptional dribbling and vision, which unsettled the Spanish defense, contributing to Nigeria's famous 3-2 victory.

Although he did not score, his efforts were pivotal in securing Nigeria's advancement to the knockout stage, where they were eventually eliminated by Denmark. This latest accolade comes as the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, despite Nigeria's failure to qualify.
