WADEMOS Raises Concerns Over Guinea-Bissau Referendum

The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) raised concerns about the conduct and aftermath of Guinea-Bissau’s constitutional referendum held on August 30. The referendum sought voter approval for a new constitution that would enhance presidential powers, reduce Parliament's size, and modify the electoral framework.

Results from the National Electoral Commission indicated that the “Yes” campaign received approximately 70 percent of valid votes, with a voter participation rate of about 63 percent. WADEMOS acknowledged the results but highlighted concerns from opposition parties and civil society regarding the process's credibility and inclusiveness.

The African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) and other groups called for a boycott, citing issues with the consultation and safeguards of the constitutional changes. WADEMOS urged Guinea-Bissau's political actors to resolve disputes peacefully and called on ECOWAS to facilitate an inclusive national dialogue to support a peaceful democratic transition.
