Malawi Stuns Nigeria 3-2 in WAFCON Debut Match

On Tuesday, Malawi's women's national football team, known as the Scorchers, made a historic debut at the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) by defeating Nigeria's Super Falcons 3-2 at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat. This victory marked the end of Nigeria's proud record of never losing to a debutant team in WAFCON history since the tournament's inception in 1998.

Prior to this match, Nigeria had an impressive record of 16 wins and one draw against debutant teams in their previous 17 encounters. The Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabita, scored three second-half goals for Malawi, while Nigeria's Rasheedat Ajibade and Uchenna Kanu contributed two goals.

This defeat is a significant upset for the 10-time champions, showcasing the emergence of Malawi in women's football on the continental stage.
