Nigeria's Super Falcons Face Malawi in WAFCON Opener

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, ten-time champions, will commence their defense of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title against Malawi, who are making their tournament debut, on Tuesday at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat. This match is significant as it will be the first meeting between Nigeria and Malawi in WAFCON history.

Nigeria has a remarkable record against tournament debutants, having never lost in their previous 17 encounters, with 16 wins and one draw. The only instance where Nigeria did not secure a victory against a debutant was during the 2008 edition against Tunisia, which ended in a goalless draw.

Historically, the Super Falcons have scored 67 goals while conceding only four against debutant teams. Their most recent matches against debutants were in 2022, where they achieved victories over Botswana (2-0) and Burundi (4-0).

With this match, Malawi will become the 21st different nation faced by Nigeria in WAFCON.
