Traditional Rulers Seek Constitutional Role in Nigeria

Traditional rulers in Nigeria, represented by Emir Zazzau Ahmadu Nuhu Bamali, have called for stronger constitutional recognition of their roles in governance and peacebuilding. Speaking at the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations forum in Kaduna State, Bamali emphasized that traditional institutions are vital for grassroots development and conflict mediation.

He noted that despite their historical significance, traditional rulers have not received adequate institutional backing since their exclusion from the 1999 constitution. Bamali highlighted the importance of traditional leaders in promoting peace and discouraging violence and hate speech.

Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, supported this call, stating that traditional rulers complement the roles of political leaders rather than compete with them. The traditional rulers are urging the National Assembly to expedite constitutional amendments to formally incorporate their roles, which they believe are essential for addressing security issues and fostering agricultural productivity in Nigeria.
