Minister Closes Wase Mining Site After Fatal Gas Emissions

On Wednesday, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Stella Oduem, ordered the closure of a mining site in Wase, Plateau State, Nigeria, after several deaths were reported due to alleged toxic gas emissions from a mine pit. The incident occurred in an area covered by mining license 11810, which is operated by a company linked to Abdullahi Dan from China.

Minister Oduem expressed condolences to the families affected and urged Governor Caleb Mutfwang to convey solidarity with the people of Wase during this tragic time. A team of forensic investigators, led by Permanent Secretary Engr.

Yusuf Yabo, has been dispatched to investigate the immediate causes of the incident and recommend sanctions. Preliminary reports indicate that the mining site had been abandoned, leading to the accumulation of hazardous gases, including sulfur oxides, which villagers unknowingly inhaled.
