FG Closes Plateau Mining Site After 30 Lives Lost

The Federal Government has ordered the closure of a mining site in Plateau State and initiated a forensic investigation following a tragic incident that claimed the lives of 30 individuals. Henri Dele Alak, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, expressed concern over safety lapses and the absence of technical representatives from the licensed company.

Preliminary security reports indicated possible non-compliance with safety regulations at the mine site. Alak emphasized that the license holder is responsible for safety oversight.

Peter Gwom, the State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, noted that mining should be a source of wealth rather than tragedy, and he called for stricter implementation of the Mining Act of 2007. The state government is collaborating with federal authorities to ensure safer mining practices.

Joyc Ramnap, representing the Federal Government, conveyed condolences to the affected community on behalf of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who had previously suspended illegal mining activities to enhance safety enforcement.
